How to Decorate Your Home Like a Santorini Hideaway

There’s no denying it: Santorini was made for bucket lists. Few places in the world can lay claim to such universal allure.

In our most recent World’s Best Awards, T+L readers named Santorini the second best island in Europe — a list it’s topped for the past five years straight — and the fifth best island in the world. It’s home to the most stunning resorts in Greece, including the gorgeous Katikies Hotel in Oia, where the floor-to-ceiling white guest rooms open up to the brilliant blues of terraced infinity pools and, of course, the sky and sea.

While the island is known for its picturesque, cliffside domes and some seriously stunning sunsets, travelers often find the interiors just as inspiring. Picture vaulted ceilings, sweeping arches, and dramatic curves contrasted with the sharp angles and maze-like directional shifts seen in traditional Greek decorative arts.

The modern, cubic cave houses of today’s Santorini are derivative of classic Cycladic architecture, which, in early settlement of the island, was born of basic need. In order to shelter themselves from harsh weather, residents made their homes inside the natural volcanic caves of the island. And why the white? To reduce absorption of the scorching-hot Aegean sun during the summer.

In your home, keep an all-white aesthetic from feeling sterile by incorporating blue accents and light wood, and having fun with mix-matched patterns in your throw pillows, vases, table settings, and other small decorative pieces. If you’re afraid the color palette might feel too New England nautical, steer clear of blue and white stripes, and look instead for quirky prints or bold solids.

Overall, when modeling your interior off of Santorini’s style, simplicity is key. The Cyclades practically invented minimalism, after all. Keep rooms uncluttered with help from hidden storage like a coffee table with drawers or by incorporating a streamlined storage space into or along the wall.

Below, we’ve gathered some Santorini-inspired pieces to help you get started on creating your own idyllic island escape.
